Your Weekly San Jose Clubs Update: September 18, 2023
Dear Member,
Monthly Mentions
So much talk about longevity and the Blue Zones. So, we thought we would dig into it in this week’s Quad. If you don’t have time to read this or watch the documentary, apparently a long, happy, healthy life boils down to being together, playing pickleball, and eating soup…But we already knew that, didn’t we?!
What is a Blue Zone, anyway? Blue zones are regions in the world where people are claimed to live, or have recently lived, longer than average.
Where did this concept come from? The concept of blue zones resulted from demographic work done by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain published in 2004. They identified Sardinia’s Nuoro Province as the region with the highest concentration of male centenarians, referring to the area as the “blue zone”. They literally colored them blue on their map, hence the name.
Where are the Blue Zones today? In addition to Sardinia, Blue Zones exist in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California.
Who is Dan Buettner? Dan is an American National Geographic Fellow and New York Times bestselling author. He has spent the last 20+ years traveling to and studying the blue zones. My favorite quote from him on a recent podcast…a long, happy life comes down to “community, pickleball, and soup”. That made my day!
What are we watching? Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, a great documentary that follows Dan into the Blue Zones to understand the habits, diets, and lifestyles of centenarians. Watch the trailer here.
What are we eating? Well, apparently, we need to eat more soup! Here is one of my favorite slow cooker Lentil Soup recipes. Enjoy!

“Select your community carefully. Gather people around you who will reinforce a healthy lifestyle.”
