Monthly Mention

Today’s edition is all about recovery, which seems to be the latest and greatest trend in leading an active lifestyle. This is a trend I happen to agree with, and have always practiced both active and passive recovery myself.

A Closer Look at Recovery

The first type of recovery that plays an essential role in feeling your best is active recovery. While active recovery still involves movement, it is much less physically intense that your standard workout. For example, taking a walk in nature, going for a swim, or centering in a gentle yoga class. These low-intensity activities help increase blood flow to your muscles, restoring them while removing toxins that build up during strenuous exercise (goodbye lactic acid!).

Tell me more about Active Recovery…

It’s highly beneficial to add in some active recovery after a workout (pre-cool down) or schedule a full active recovery day into your regular routine. Listen to your body and do what feels right.

What is Passive Recovery?

When it comes to passive recovery, this type is pretty much what it sounds like: a period of time dedicated to healing with little to no movement. And no, it doesn’t include vegging in front of Netflix or mindlessly scrolling through your phone. Passive recovery should be intentional and good for your body and mind, no different than your workout.

Tell me more…

Meditation, massage, and saunas are some great examples of passive recovery options you may already be familiar with. With recent innovations in this area of recovery, our team has begun rolling out Recovery Zones in our Clubs that feature cutting-edge wellness technologies for passive recovery. From HydroMassage Chairs to Normatec Boots, CryoLounge Chairs, and Hypervolt Percussion, these spaces are already becoming wildly popular.

As of today, we have Recovery Zones located at Walnut Creek, El Segundo, and Carmel Valley, with 9 more Recovery spaces opening in the next few months from Seattle to San Francisco. We’ll continue to learn and innovate to ensure we are delivering the best in aiding your recovery. It’s worth noting there’s no charge extra for this awesomeness–it’s all part of your membership!

And while we are on the topic of recovery, I wanted to share my favorite breathing exercise, called “box breathing”. It’s a form of passive recovery that I do in the car on my long commute days.
Here’s how it works:

  • Inhale slowly for a count of 4
  • Hold your breath for a count of 4
  • Exhale slowly for a count of 4
  • Hold your exhalation for a count of 4

Repeat until you feel present and centered. It could be one round; it could be many.

Here’s to prioritizing your well-being with effective recovery practices that support your body and mind, ensuring you stay refreshed and balanced.
